Background Information
“No nation will economically survive in the 21st Century Cyberspace, unless she masters the global cybercriminality and cybersecurity challenges. To escape the ferocious consequences of Cyber Tsunami, African Nations must address and proffer solutions to these issues as a national priority agenda” (Chris Uwaje – Press Interview 2006)
Institutional and enterprise cybercrime in Africa, and Nigeria in particular is growing at an alarming rate which demands better understanding of the related socio-economic impact analysis as it affect our national critical economic infrastructures and sectors. Harmonized nationwide awareness and collective practical solutions to cyber-criminalities at policy and decision makers’ level are critically needed among industries, government, law enforcement and all stakeholders.
We recognize and respect the emergence of a new democratic Nigeria with her delicate social and economic challenges. We are fully aware of Nationalistic legacy of Mr. President to build a vibrant, crime free and enduring economy development platform as encapsulated in vision 2020 for the prosperity of our great country, Nigeria.
ICT Empowerment and National Security
However, the platform upon which the legacy can be fully realized within the shortest possible time is through a formidable and cybersecured ICT driven platform. ICT platform is the key to the national economic growth and empowerment of our teeming population. But the cybersecurity venerability of our National and enterprise ICT infrastructures as it affects individuals, businesses, states, National government operations must be addressed first.
We have a duty call to assist and empower our nation in the current era of digitalization and globalization of international commerce and trade. The adverse effect of which is “Digital Criminality ” that has more devastating effect on developing economy such as ours than the traditional criminality committed via physical means.
The National Workshop on Cybercrime
In view of this therefore, we are presenting to you our “National Cybercrime Awareness and Solution Workshop’’ with the overall theme “National Digital Security: Engaging the Challenges of Digital Criminality, & the Future of Nigeria” - The Role of Federal Government With special focus on financial sector.
As the national independent flag bearers of Cybercrime and Cybersecurity in Nigeria, it is our duty and strong desire to work with national government, private sectors leaders and established institutions to provide a coordinated and collaborative platform for actions against national security and economy threats of cybersecurity vulnerabilities as it affect our country and our international image.
Technology, Financial and other related economic cybercrimes can best fought and prevented via an effective cybersecurity vulnerability solution, surveillance framework, and capacity building of stakeholders.
The Objectives of the National Cybercrime Workshop
- The forthcoming interactive leaders focused seminar seeks to bring to the knowledge of National government and principal sector drivers, the components of emerging and existing institutional and enterprise digital crime, analyze the cause, the adverse impact on socio-economic development and performance with special focus on the financial sector of the economy as a nation’s case study.
- The seminar will also seek to integrate cybercrime awareness strategies and digital crime control into financial sector business operations, and explore local solution policies and global best practices available to stakeholders to guard against international, institutional and enterprise cybercriminal invasion.
- The national seminar will provide a cross platform digital security solution framework that can be proactively incorporated into the existing National Government economic development program of actions as encapsulated in vision 2020.
Why Special focus On Financial Sectors?
Between 2005-2007 global financial houses lost over 5billion USD to Cybercrime. Nigeria Banks lost over 1 billion Naira to Cybercrime related activities. Growing on the lists of most malicious cybercriminal targets is the financial sectors. This sector is one of the most strategic important sectors that have direct socio-economic impact on the lives and businesses of average Nigerians and government operations.
Unfortunately, financial sector is the hottest and biggest target of cybercrime in recent time. Billions of money in dollars has been invested, with million of careers generated via this sector. We can not afford to wait and allow cybercriminals to perpetuate themselves endlessly without a formidable challenge. We must have a forum to fully understand the gross pandemic and adverse effects of cybercrime in this sector.
